Designer Kim Jones told AFP that Dior presented a lighter collection with huge cats during Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday in an effort to combat the depressing state of the globe. The large cartoon cats that were scattered around the menswear collection’s runway were influenced by Jones, an ardent art collector, and South African ceramicist Hylton Nel.
The overall look of the clothes was more carefree than previous Dior collections, with loose, rounded outlines on the work coats and suits and baggy pants and shorts. Nel’s artwork appeared as prints on a number of the ensembles. Numerous items featured “cloche” or bell-shaped hats crafted by South African designers, as well as collars resembling scarves that were inspired by Yves Saint-Laurent’s sketches from his 1960 Dior job.
